Lockdown at Lomita-area school lifted after shots fired nearby

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Someone inside a pickup truck fired a pistol into the air in a Lomita-area neighborhood Thursday, prompting a lockdown at a nearby primary school until authorities determined that there was no lingering threat.

The non-injury gunfire on the west side of Audubon Elementary in the 8100 block San Vicente Street was reported shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.

School administrators kept all students secured in their classrooms while officers searched the campus and surrounding area, SDPD spokesman Ed Zwibel said.

Police gave an all-clear about 2 p.m., after which the school went back into normal operations.

Witnesses told police the shooter was in a red full-size truck with landscaping equipment in its cargo bed, Zwibel said.
