EL CAJON (CBS 8) - Firefighters are investigating arson as a possible cause of a series of brush fires that erupted in the East County.

Three fires were sparked within a few minutes of each other along a 10-mile stretch of Interstate 8 on Thursday.

The largest fire broke out near the Los Coches Road exit on the eastbound side of the freeway at about 5:20 p.m. on Thursday. Crews were able to hold containment lines away from homes, which were briefly threatened.

Two smaller brush fires were also reported along Greenfield Drive and Dunbar Lane in the East County. It was unclear if arson is suspected there as well.

More than 30 acres were burned total.

The cause is under investigation.
