National Gymnastics Day

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Ready to get on the balance beam or how about a floor exercise? Well, for some that's exactly what they'll be doing. Friday is National Gymnastics Day.

USA Gymnastics, Right To Play, McDonald's (Otay Lakes Road) and Chairman Greg Cox (County of San Diego), will be teaming up with the South Bay Family YMCA to bring gymnastics (and the opportunity to play) to YMCA day campers at Olympic View Elementary School.

Located at 1220 South Greensview Drive in Chula Vista, hundreds of YMCA day campers will have the opportunity to do cartwheels, forward rolls, hand stands, walk on a balance beam, and learn about the sport of gymnastics. National Gymnastics Day is dedicated to increasing the excitement for the sport of gymnastics, while providing awareness about the health benefits of the sport.

The South Bay Family YMCA is home to the largest competitive gymnastics facility (Kari Lyn Sutherland Gymnastics Center) in south county, serving more than 8,000 gymnasts annually. It's a prestigious honor for the South Bay Family YMCA to be the sole YMCA in the nation to receive a grant ($1,000) from USA Gymnastics and Right To Play.

In concert with the celebration of National Gymnastics Day, the YMCA will be announcing publicly the grand opening date for the Eastlake YMCA. The Eastlake YMCA will be a 36,000 square foot facility in the east Chula Vista. With more than 17,000 square feet of gymnastics space, the Eastlake YMCA will house the newly expanded Kari Lyn Sutherland Gymnastics Center. In addition to gymnastics, the Eastlake YMCA will be offering group exercise classes, a cross training center and child watch services. This will be a $1.45 million dollar project, funded solely by the YMCA.

Thirty-nine new YMCA positions will be created for the Eastlake YMCA.
