Local IRS employees speak out against government shutdown

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Local IRS employees gathered downtown Thursday to speak out against the government shutdown.

The workers are members of the National Treasury Employees Union. They say they are feeling the immediate consequences of not getting paid, and also worry the shutdown will have long-lasting effects on the workforce.

"We're going to lose some of our best personnel with the federal government. They came here to serve the government and now they're taking a cut in pay. I think a lot of them will leave, they'll go find better jobs," 32-year IRS employee Gerald Williams said.

The NTEU represents more than 150,000 federal employees across the nation.
