Function at the Junction

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A story like this could only happen in a town like Descanso, in a crossroads cafe where everybody knows your name. Actually it's a miracle that the Descanso Junction Restaurant survived three weeks, much less ten years.

"My husband and I opened the restaurant three weeks before the Cedar Fire. We dumped our life savings into opening the restaurant," owner Tammy Cooker said.

So after a decade of serving hearty home-cooked meals to a neighborly group of backcountry regulars, the 100-year-old building was in need of a remodel.

"We didn't have the money to do everything that we did and the community came together and donated labor. They donated all the décor," Tammy said.

J.R. Bailey built the bar out wood rescued from the Cedar Fire.

"Put the post in, put the beam up here, did the salad bar at the other end," he said.

Jason Livesay put 26 coats of finish on the bar top.

"It's amazing. Everyone in the town came together to help facilitate the remodel. It's just amazing, the volunteer time. I think it has to do with Brett and Tammy are the best people in the world," Jason said.

It seems like everyone in town has left their mark on the Descanso Junction Restaurant.

"We had a branding party. All the local ranchers, we had over 125 people at the branding party," Tammy said.

In the morning mountain chill, the Descanso Junction Restaurant was filled with a warm glow.

"It truly was unbelievable. We could have never made this happen without them," Tammy said.

Only in a town like Descanso could a country breakfast be served with the milk of human kindness.
