SDSU trolley-depot blaze prompts evacuation

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An electrical fire at San Diego State University Transit Center prompted the evacuation of hundreds of students from a nearby classroom building Tuesday and halted late-morning bus and trolley service at the campus.

The non-injury blaze erupted shortly before 9:30 a.m. in a utility room below the dual-level depot in the 5200 block of Campanile Drive, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Campus administrators evacuated about 200 people from the nearby Adam Humanities structure as a precaution as firefighters doused the blaze, which broke out in a room that houses batteries and other backup-power equipment, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

It took firefighters about 10 minutes to smother the flames with dry chemicals, Luque said.

Transit administrators deployed buses to transport rail riders around the area and used a built-in ventilation system to clear the air in the train tunnel running beneath the southern outskirts of the university.

Trolley and Metropolitan Transit System bus service at the campus resumed about 11:15 a.m., according to MTS officials. Students and teachers were allowed back into the evacuated building a short time later, SDSU spokeswoman Natalia Van Stralen said.

The blaze caused an estimated $50,000 worth of equipment damage, Luque said. The cause was under investigation.
