CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A fire damaged a South Bay senior-housing complex Tuesday, injuring two people and leaving about two dozen residents in need of interim lodging.

The blaze at the three-story apartment building in the 300 block of Fifth Avenue in Chula Vista was reported about 8:45 a.m., city Fire Chief Dave Hanneman said.

Public works personnel who happened to be in the area helped firefighters and police clear the second and third floors of the burning structure. Some residents who use wheelchairs and walkers were carried out, Hanneman said.

It took engine crews from Chula Vista, San Diego and National City about 15 minutes to subdue the flames, which were confined to a single top-floor unit.

A resident who said she felt ill after being evacuated and a young man -- a relative of one of the tenants -- who suffered minor burns were taken to hospitals, the chief said.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced arrange for emergency housing.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
