Local police lend a hand for education

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Local police and residents are doing their part to help educators stay on track in the face of extreme budget cuts.

Money is tight, but elementary kids are getting a big donation of school supplies Tuesday morning.

National City Police Department police officers, city workers and residents dropped off notebooks, pencils, folders, backpacks and other school supplies to 10 local elementary schools.

This is third year of the program, which aims to help educators make up for reduced state funding.

"As cutbacks to the education system have affected them, our main focus is to try to help that and help our kids succeed. It also provides a really good opportunity for us to interact with the kids," an officer said.

Staples, the Rotary Club and Walmart donated the supplies, estimated to cost about $6,500.
