Local military school admin accused of molesting students

CARLSBAD (CNS/CBS 8) - An ex-administrator for a North County military boarding school was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting at least six of his one-time students.

Jeffery S. Barton, 55, who was employed at Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad from 1995 until earlier this year, was taken into custody Thursday evening, authorities said.

The investigation began in June, when a former student of the college-preparatory school, now an adult, reported allegations of past sexual conduct on the part of Barton, police Lt. Marc Reno said. Detectives subsequently developed leads and identified the additional purported victims.

"Protecting children is the police department's highest priority," said City of Carlsbad Police Chief Gary Morrison, in a statement to media. "We are equally outraged by the possibility of such a crime occurring in our community. We take any report of this nature very seriously, and we are using every available resource in our investigation."

Barton, an Oceanside resident, was booked into county jail in Vista on suspicion of 16 felony counts. Barton is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday on 14 counts of forcible oral copulation and two counts of sodomy.

Carlsbad Police worry that there could be more victims out there. Any potential victims and witnesses are asked to call the Carlsbad Police Department hotline at 760-931-2276.

"We are hoping that anybody that has knowledge, as minute as you may think it be," said Lt. Marc Reno, "we will look into it to see if somebody else out there is a victim."

Barton's bond is set at $6 million.
