Fatal shooting in Mountain View

A gunman shot and killed a man and wounded a woman during a house party Sunday in the Mountain View area of San Diego, a police lieutenant said.

SAN DIEGO (CNS/CBS 8) - A gunman shot and killed a man and wounded a woman during a house party Sunday in the Mountain View area of San Diego, a police lieutenant said.

A gunman approached the front yard area of a home in the 600 block of Jewell Drive where he opened fired and wounded the victims, said San Diego police Lt. Mike Hastings.

Police and paramedics were dispatched to the location at 1:41 a.m. where a 63-year-old man died at the scene and a 51-year-old woman was shot in the lower extremities, Hastings said.

Josue Lopez was home with his parents early Sunday when he heard shots ring out from this home across the street.

"I was just in shock. I mean, I was just laying around relaxing. I just got up quick to go see what was going on," Lopez said. "At first, I didn't see anything...but later on, people started coming outside screaming and I saw the cops come."

A relative told News 8 there was a birthday party going on at the time and that someone walked up to the front yard and started shooting.

Two people were hit. Ralph Arnold Green, 63, died at the scene. His cousin, described only as a 51-year-old woman was transported to UCSD Medical Center where she underwent surgery and was admitted into the ICU.

Police and yellow tape blocked the street for several hours as detectives interviewed witnesses hoping to make an arrest.

Residents say they're surprised, noting how quiet this area typically is.

"They were just in shock. I mean, nothing like that has happened around this block or in the neighborhood. I was just in shock too," Lopez said.

As of Sunday afternoon, no one was in custody and there was no description of the suspect.

San Diego police homicide detectives asked anyone who saw the shooting attack to call them at (619) 531-2293.
