Stolen Super Bowl ring found after more than two decades

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The 1971 Super Bowl ring owned by former Charger and Hall of Famer, Lance Alworth, which was reported stolen 25 years ago, has been located at an auction house in Laguna Nigel, California.

"I thought it was gone forever. so it's pretty special to get it back," Alworth said.

The ring was on display at Trophy's Restaurant in Mission Valley, known for displaying sports memorabilia, when it was reported stolen by the restaurant in 1988. At that time, the San Diego Police Department investigated the theft as a commercial burglary.

Then, Alworth received a telephone call from an unknown individual on September 7, 2013, demanding $40,000 for the return of the stolen ring.

"Well the conversation was really kind of funny because the lady said 'I understand that you lost your ring' and I said yes, the ring was stolen, and she said 'No, no, no, you lost it in a poker game,'" Alworth said.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department Encinitas Station immediately began investigating and officers were able to locate the ring in a Laguna Nigel auction house. The ring was scheduled for auction on November 20, 2013, with an opening bid of $44,000.

So far, no arrests have been made in this case, and now the investigation is being handed over to the District Attorney's Office for review.

Alworth earned the ring just one year after leaving the Chargers for the Dallas Cowboys. He scored a touchdown for them in their Super Bowl win over Miami.

"To have this happen is a miracle. I mean it really is a miracle to appear after all these years," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sheriff's Detective Jaime Rodriguez at (760) 966-3504 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
