CHULA VISTA (CNS / CBS 8) - A motorist was hospitalized Wednesday with major head injuries following a two-vehicle crash in Chula Vista believed to be the result of drunken driving, police said.

The crash in the 400 block of East H Street occurred about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to Chula Vista police Capt. Gary Wedge.

A westbound Volkswagen Passat struck another vehicle, sending both vehicles into a center median, he said, noting the Passat also struck a tree and overturned.

The vehicle's passenger was able to get out of the car on his own, but the driver, 23-year-old Raoul De La Torre was ejected. The car caught fire as he was laying on the ground. That's when Justin Cortes stopped to help.

"I ran out to be a first responder and noticed the vehicle was on fire,so I dragged him out as far as I could and stabilized him," Cortes said.

The 23-year-old driver of the Passat was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital with major head injuries and a passenger in the Passat sustained minor injuries, Wedge said. No one in the other vehicle was injured.

"The cause of the collision has not been determined but alcohol appears to have been a factor," Wedge said.

The driver may face DUI charges, police said.
