CARLSBAD (CBS 8) - Smashed and scorched wreckage from a messy crash in Carlsbad was cleaned up late Wednesday night, after two vehicles collided on southbound I-5 and flew off the freeway.

CHP is investigating whether the driver of a BMW was drunk when he slammed into the back of a truck, sending both vehicles careening through a guard rail and down an embankment near Carlsbad Village Drive.

According to witnesses the BMW was traveling at high speeds in and out of traffic before colliding into the back of a 1997 Ford utility truck, driven by a 29-year-old man from San Bernardino.

Both vehicles flipped over and landed in the parking lot of an apartment complex, at the end of Pine Avenue

The driver of the BMW has been identified as Aaron Sanchez, 30, of Vista. CHP investigators say he was briefly trapped in his vehicle before being rescued. He was then rushed to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with serious injuries.

The truck that Sanchez allegedly hit also flipped over in the accident. The truck's engine caught fire and had to be extinguished by emergency crews.

The driver of the Ford truck complained of pain to his shoulder and head. His male passenger complained of pain to his neck.

Nobody in the neighborhood below the freeway was injured.

The crash is under investigation by the CHP.
