Therapy pets wishing hospital patients happy Howl-oween

LA MESA (CBS 8) - What's cuter than kids in Halloween costumes? How about pets in costumes?

It is a special day at Sharp Grossmont Hospital as therapy dogs, dressed up for Halloween, are going door to door inside -- not tricking -- just treating and lifting spirits this Halloween.

Sharp Grossmont Hospital has 16 dog volunteers and one cat volunteer. They come in and visit patients to uplift their day as part of a therapy program.

They are certified therapy animals, they have a weekly volunteer shift and the group has contributed 2,000 hours last year to the hospital.

CBS News 8 met up with Gabriel Sanchez, a patient who suffered a stroke four weeks ago and lost mobility to his left side. He says there is something about the outside of a dog that is good for inside of a man.

Sharp Hospital is always looking to grow its animal therapy program, so if you have a special furry friend with a patient, well behaved demeanor, get him or her certified through an approved therapy program, and you too can add a little spirit to the day of those who need it.
