PACIFIC BEACH (CBS 8) - Family and friends gathered Saturday to remember a man who was killed by a hit-and-run driver while walking home from work last weekend.

A celebration of life was held for 20-year-old Jacob Geenwald at a church in Pacific Beach.

"He was like a best friend...a brother I never had."

A fun-loving, helpful man who liked to skateboard and hang out at the beach, is how loved ones describe Jacob Greenwald.

"Jacob was put here on this earth to make people feel good about themselves...and that's what he did," family friend Deanna Rodgers said.

Saturday afternoon, those who knew him best gathered at El Camino Memorial in Pacific Beach to celebrate his life.

Through music and personal memories, the crowd of dozens was often brought to tears. But they also shared some laughs remembering all the times Jacob made them smile.

"He'd come over and I don't know if any of you know...but boy his feet stunk."

Jacob was hit and killed early Sunday morning while walking home from his job at the Spring Valley McDonald's.

Police later arrested Jason Palmer, who according to them, was likely under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

"Life is so beautiful, but so short. And, it sucks that it happens to the ones closest to you that you never think it will happen to," friend Kris Baker said.

CBS News 8 has learned the 32-year-old a lengthy criminal record, which includes another DUI hit-and-run and an early release from prison as a result of the states assembly bill 109.

At the time his arrest, Palmer smirked, yet showed no emotion after pleading not guilty in court.

"I have really no words for this guy. He shouldn't have done it, and I don't what's going through his mind. I hope it hits him."

If prosecutors get enough evidence to add a DUI charge, Jason Palmer could face up to life in prison if convicted.

If you have any information on where Palmer was last Saturday night, please call the CHP office in El Cajon at 619-401-2000.
