Unregistered convicted sex offender pleads not guilty

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A convicted sex offender has pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a felony charge of failure to register.

Danny Shaw, 29, was arrested at a children's trick-or-treating event in Ramona on Halloween night. He was reportedly harassing the children and slipped candy into the bag of at least one of them.

Shaw was originally convicted of a sexual offense in Oregon in 2003, which required him to register as a sex offender.

"In 2005, he was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender in San Diego County, for which he was convicted of a felony. He has not registered in the state of California since 2005, and that is the basis of our charges here," Deputy District Attorney Derek Grilz said.

Shaw is being held on $100,000 bail. He's due back in court next Friday.
