Financial boost for fighting DUIs in North County

Posted: Updated:

OCEANSIDE (CNS) - The city of Oceanside has been awarded a $219,578 state grant to combat drunken driving in the North County city, police announced Wednesday.

"We are grateful for this grant award from the California Office of Traffic Safety that affords us the opportunity to concentrate our traffic enforcement efforts on the traffic issues that compromise the safety of our community," Oceanside police Chief Frank McCoy said.

In 2012, two people died and 66 others were injured in crashes in which alcohol or drugs played a role, according to Oceanside police officials, who said the grant money will fund additional checkpoint operations and other DUI-related programs.
