SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It's a chance for kids at several San Diego high schools to get their careers in gear.

Donated engines and transmissions are giving transportation technology students some hands-on experience, and these are not lawnmower engines.

They're motors and components donated by Toyota, including late-model Camry, Lexus and even hybrids.

On Wednesday, students showed off their skills and compared notes with certified Toyota mechanics.

"We need more technicians. We're building our future is what we're dong. We build great cars, we need great technicians to go along with it," Rick Shinkle of Toyota Motor Sales said.

Toyota donated 34 engines and drive-train components to four San Diego high schools.
