KFC employees forced in freezer during armed robbery

CHULA VISTA (CBS 8) - Authorities are investigating an armed robbery overnight in the South Bay that could be related to an incident earlier this week.

Deputies say employees at an Imperial Beach Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in the 1000 block of 13th Street were forced into a freezer at gunpoint by a black man in a ski mask just before 10 p.m. Wednesaday.

The robber then told the manager of the restaurant to open the business' cash registers before having the manager join the other employees in the freezer, he said.

It was not immediately clear whether the robber fled on foot or in a vehicle. It was also unclear how long the employees stayed in the freezer. No injuries were reported.

Authorities described the robber as black, last seen wearing a dark colored ski mask, dark gloves, dark colored pants and a white long-sleeved button-up shirt with a tie.

Anyone with information about the robbery was asked to call the sheriff's station in Imperial Beach at (619) 498-2400 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

Tuesday, employees at a Chula Vista Subway restaurant were locked in a refrigerator after being held up by a suspect matching a similar description.

Investigators have not confirmed if the two robberies are related.
