Brush fire ignites in Presidio Park

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8 / CNS) - Airborne and ground firefighters needed about 30 minutes to knock down a blaze that blackened part of a brushy hillside in historic Presidio Park Thursday, authorities reported.

Flames began spreading through thick foliage near the 2800 block of Jackson Street, near Taylor Street just south of Interstate 8, about 11:30 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Ground crews battling the flames were supported by personnel on two emergency-services helicopters making water drops. The burn area was contained to about a quarter-acre, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

The fire moved to within 150 yards of 85-year-old Junipero Serra Museum, a Spanish mission-style edifice that houses the collection of the San Diego History Center and is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.

There were no immediate reports of structural damage or injuries. The cause of the fire was under investigation, though investigators believe it might have been set by a transient. Authorities were trying to locate the man for questioning.
