Emergency drill simulates major earthquake at SDSU

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - First responders worked hard into the morning Thursday rescuing wounded victims trapped in the trolley tunnel at SDSU, but don't worry -- it wasn't real.

CBS News 8 was there as over 20 agencies took part in the drill, which simulated a major earthquake.

During the exercise, volunteers acted as victims trapped underground at the SDSU trolley station. Rescue teams were sent in to pull them out and assess damage, mostly in the dark.

"It's great for us to be able to come out here and work in the dark. Emergencies happen 24 hours a day and this gives us the opportunity to work in the toughest conditions," SDFD Bat. Chief Dan Froelich said.

The exercise is part of an entire week of drills being conducted by various agencies throughout the county.
