Innocent bystanders hit by gunfire near Gillespie Field

EL CAJON (CNS) - A woman in her early 20s was recovering Friday after she was wounded by gunfire intended for someone else in a liquor store parking lot in unincorporated El Cajon, police said.

Deputies responded to a call of "shots fired" at 340 E. Bradley Ave. shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Scott Sterner.

Once there, they found a female passenger in a white SUV parked in a parking lot at the corner of Bradley and Graves avenues had been shot in the shoulder, Sterner said, noting there were also three young children in the vehicle and one of them was struck in the arm with a piece of shattered glass.

Paramedics took the woman to a local hospital to treat a non-life threatening wound. The child was also expected to be OK.

Investigators later learned that in the moments leading up to the shooting, a black male in his late teens to early 20s, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black shorts, was arguing with two other males in their early 20s in the same parking lot.

The first male began walking across Bradley Avenue and began firing a semi-automatic handgun at the other two males, according to Sterner. At the same time, the SUV had pulled into the parking lot and the woman was struck by a bullet in one of her shoulders, he said.

"There were several witnesses to the shooting who were very helpful in piecing together the chain of events," Sterner said. "Several pieces of evidence were collected at the scene and the case is being actively investigated by detectives. At this time the suspect is still outstanding."
