Natural-gas leak prompts brief evacuation

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A natural-gas leak prompted a brief evacuation in a Fairmount Park-area neighborhood Friday.

A construction worker digging in the 3600 block of Ash Street accidentally ruptured a utility pipeline shortly before 10:30 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

As a precaution, emergency personnel evacuated two nearby condominium complexes, though the buildings were largely unoccupied at the time of the non-injury mishap, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said.

A San Diego Gas & Electric crew had the leak under control within 90 minutes.
