OCEANSIDE (CNS) - An under-age drunken driver and another person were arrested for suspicion of drunken driving at an overnight checkpoint, police said Saturday.

A sobriety checkpoint was conducted by Oceanside Police Department's Traffic Services Unit in the 1800 block of Mission Avenue between 9 p.m. Friday and 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

A total of 14 citations were issued by police, including eight for unlicensed drivers.

Officers looked at drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol or drug impairment.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, sobriety checkpoints have proven to be the most effective drunken driving enforcement strategies, and yield cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.

Drunken drivers can expect jail time, license suspension and car insurance increases as well as fines, fees, DUI classes and other costs that can exceed $10,000, police said.
