SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 27-year-old San Diego man was killed and the 24-year-old woman driving a 2008 Scion he was riding in suffered major injuries when the car rolled over on the Cabrillo (163) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident was reported at 6:05 p.m. Saturday on the transition from the southbound Cabrillo Freeway to the westbound Soledad (52) Freeway, said San Diego CHP Officer J. Kight.

The 2008 Scion was traveling southbound on the Cabrillo Freeway at an unknown speed, Kight said. "The driver could not safely negotiate the right hand curve on the transition road. The vehicle veered to the right, went up a dirt embankment, and began to spin around as the driver over corrected the steering back to the left," Kight said.

The vehicle came back down the embankment onto the roadway and began to overturn an unknown number of times," the officer said.

"Two of the occupants were ejected from the vehicle. One of the occupants sustained fatal injuries and a second occupant sustained major injuries," Kight said. "The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation."

The driver, and the 27-year-old man who died were not wearing seatbelts, the officer said. A 23-year-old woman who suffered minor injuries and was also a passenger was wearing a seatbelt.
