Volunteers spend weekend thanking service members

San Diegans volunteered their time Sunday in the spirit of Veteran's Day to say thank you to our service men and women.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diegans volunteered their time Sunday in the spirit of Veteran's Day to say thank you to our service men and women.

On the eve of Veterans Day, teens are volunteering their weekend to say thank you to our service men and women and not to forget the sacrifices our armed forces are making during the holidays.

"Dear hero, thank you for your service and have a great holiday," Brian Chung said. 

"I want to thank you for everything you sacrificed for our country and everything you do is truly appreciated by everyone back home," another volunteer said. 

As part of the Red Cross "Holiday Mail for Heroes Program," volunteers and youth groups crowded tables writing a personal message, cutting out a holiday images, drawing a perfect Christmas tree, letting service members know they will never forget. 

"I hope it makes them feel good and appreciated and that we are thinking about them," Chung said. 

The goal to send more than a million cards to the U.S. Armed Forces members who will be making the ultimate sacrifice during the holidays. 

"I want to thank them for all their work and I just want to wish them a really happy holiday and their season is filled with happiness and joy," said Sabrina Woo. 

The Red Cross will send these cards to service members all over the world. Wounded warriors in hospitals and families who won't have their hero home for the holidays. 

Gabriel 13:08 "I hope that they feel jolly and happy. That warm feeling that Christmas is coming and you wake up and you just want to open your presents," Gabriel Esgueria said. 

And opening small gift like this card is a small gesture but with a big meaning. 

"I want to let them know I really appreciate what they have done," Woo said. 

Each child as their own message but it all ends in a "thank you." 

"I hope that your holiday is filled with happiness and joy."
