One dead in rollover crash in Mission Bay

MISSION BAY (CBS 8) - An investigation was under way Monday into a traffic accident in which a 30-year-old man died after he lost control of his speeding vehicle and hit a tree in Mission Bay Park.

The accident happened at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday on the transition ramp from West Mission Bay Drive to SeaWorld Drive.

The man was killed when his SUV left the road and slammed into a tree. Investigators say the force of the impact was so great the man's seatbelt broke and he was thrown from the vehicle.

"The vehicle was going at a high rate of speed...it went sideways into the tree. The tree is pretty much split in two pieces," SDPD acting sergeant Victoria Houseman said. It struck the driver's side of the vehicle and it appears the vehicle may have rolled...and so the front of the vehicle has heavy damage as well as the driver's side."

Police say moments before the crash they received a call from someone reporting a reckless driver. The report matched the description of the SUV.
