7-year-old Shaniya is still waiting to find a forever home

Posted: Updated:

It was exactly three years ago when we first featured Shaniya. Shaniya thought she had found a forever home, but social workers say her hopes were dashed when the family changed their mind.

Shaniya is a resilient little girl whose heart needs some TLC, after being broken.

When we first met Shaniya in 2010, she was an adorable and giggly four-year-old.

This polite, affectionate and carefree preschooler loved to sing. But these days, Shaniya is still singing the same tune and sadly, three years later, Shaniya is still searching for her forever home.

Shaniya is now a spunky and happy little girl, who still has that infectious giggle. Playing miniature golf with her at Boomer's San Diego, I learned she is also quite determined and she knows how to improvise.

Being able to adapt is something Shaniya has had to learn the hard way, after being matched with an adoptive family that moved to the East Coast. They decided to send her back to San Diego.

"She was heartbroken, but she's really doing well and has been doing amazing since she came back, for what she's been through and for having somebody give up on her," said protective services worker Nicole Espinosa. "She just has a great spirit and attitude, so we're very determined to find her that best family."

Shaniya is now in second grade and tells me she loves to write and tell stories:

"Once upon a time there was a little girl named Shaniya and she like to write and she loved her favorite subject was Math. She knows how to add and subtract. The end."

But what she's really counting on is a family to call her own.

Shaniya has certainly been on a bumpy road, filled with unexpected turns in her short life and what she deserves is unconditional love to get her on the right track.

I found Shaniya to be outgoing, easy going and funny.

Like all foster kids, Shaniya has suffered trauma, but with structure, consistency, and commitment, she will thrive.

CBS News 8 would also like to thank Boomers San Diego for hosting a fun day at the park and photographer Evan Yamada for volunteering his time to take the beautiful Heart Gallery photos you saw in our story.
