Salute to vets

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - At times, we all take for granted the wonderful freedoms we enjoy every day. But today everyone has an opportunity to say thanks to the men and women who make it possible.

Let us take a moment on this your special day

To thank you for your service be it here or in some fray.

These freedoms we hold dear come at a steep price

You were willing for all of us to make that sacrifice.

It is that distinct badge of honor that all veterans share

So we offer up our gratitude and perhaps a little prayer

For leaving home and family to answer a nation's call

To return, wounded warriors, or sometimes not at all.

It hurts that we're so divided, polarized by the politics of the day.

Rhetoric on the left and right, solidarity in disarray.

And you know, it all seems so petty, just back alley deals

When you see vast contributions of the heroes in these fields.

The greatest country in the world wasn't just an accident

Not an act of Congress or the program of a president

It took average citizens stepping up, just like you and me

Who left their homes and families to keep our country free.

And along the way some conflicts were more popular than others

Some hogtied by politics, ambushing our sisters and brothers

Still they fought on valiantly against an enemy almost unseen,

Their deeds no less heroic, their selfless act serene.

Take a look around here, and calculate liberty's cost.

To enjoy the freedoms that we do, try to total up the loss

Are we're still the best nation on the earth, by far, you bet

And if you want to the reason, just go thank a vet.

While most people are glued to their televisions for the popular "Shark Week" others are making a difference off our coast.  Particularly a local tattoo artist, Kyle Walker, who uses his profits to raise money for shark finning prevention and awareness.

More than 42,000 people showed up to Del Mar's opening day last year.  Just imagine navigating such a huge crowd for hours on end, sounds like you'd be in need of some serious spa time afterward.
