Drowsy driver slams into fire hydrant in Mira Mesa

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8 / CNS) - A motorist struck a fire hydrant in Mira Mesa early Wednesday, causing water to gush into the street and prompting an hours-long road closure, police said.

The crash in the 9200 block of Mira Mesa Boulevard was reported at 1:51 a.m., after a woman fell asleep at the wheel of her vehicle and hit the hydrant.

The roadway was closed until about 4 a.m., while crews worked to stop the water and clean up the area, according to San Diego police Sgt. Robin Rose. The road was recently paved over so it took crews some time to find the records and locate a shut off valve.

No one was injured and alcohol was not involved, added the Sergeant, who said only property damage was reported.
