Raglan Public House: Thinking inside the bun

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - There's a cozy pub, in the heart of OB, where the menu leans Kiwi. Raglan Public House is a locals' hangout.

"The crew that opened the place, we're all from OB," P.J. Lamont said.

However, the bill of fair has a New Zealand flair. In fact, Raglan's signature burger will have you asking, where's the beef?

"This is our staple. It's a New Zealand-style lamb burger. Boneless leg of lamb, grass-fed, all-natural that we grind in house here daily," P.J. said.

It's cooked on the grill with mint jelly that melts into the meat.

"Then it's topped with blue cheese, beet root, tomato chutney," P.J. said.

So you don't even have to add ketchup. In fact, to a New Zealander putting ketchup on a lamb burger would be a sacrilege, much like putting ketchup on a hot dog.

"This is fish and chips. We do cold water haddock in beer batter. Large steak fries with homemade tartar sauce," P.J. said.

Raglan Public House has become a haven for soccer fans. The owners themselves profess a love for Tijuana Xolos and Mexican soccer. Patrons enjoy the fixture on the pitch, while the staff pumps out brews and burgers. Yet despite all the Kiwi connections, Raglan Public House's burger of the month is quite American, something you might find in a pilgrim's lunch sack.

"The turkey sandwich with brie cheese, stuffing, mayo, homemade cranberry relish and a side of gravy," P.J. said.

Raglan Public House has a welcoming feel.

"The food is very good. The quality is very good and everyone that works here cares," a customer said.

If you're not into the game, you can people watch from the curbside stools or dine al fresco from the outside terrace adjacent to the Astroturf wall. It's fun, whether watching a match, hanging out with friends or just out on the lamb.
