Tuite retrial: Defense now focusing on Joshua Treadway

More gripping testimony Friday in the retrial of Richard Tuite -- accused in the stabbing death of Stephanie Crowe more than 15 years ago.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Michael Crowe broke down on the stand Thursday at the retrial of Richard Tuite, the man accused of killing his sister Stephanie in 1998. On Friday, more painful memories were relived as Michael's childhood friend Joshua Treadway took the stand to watch his own interrogation tapes.

The interrogations of Treadway lasted for hours. The detectives seemed bent on linking him to the murder of Stephanie Crowe. Her brother Michael and another friend were also arrested.

Police were able to get Joshua to false confess to a number of things. First, that he cleaned off a knife believed to be the murder weapon. Eventually they got him to admit he acted as a lookout the night of the murder. He later said he agreed with police because he was scared of going to prison.

Police say they compared his answers to what they told him was a lie detector machine. The boy repeatedly asked to see the results of his test, but police always refused to show him. All of this would eventually be thrown out, a judge saying the statements were illegally coerced.

It's expected the jury will continue to watch those video tapes again on Monday and possibly into Tuesday.
