Lots of San Diegans sign up with Covered California

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The number of people in San Diego signing up for affordable care is surging. That's the word Friday from Peter Lee, the executive director of Covered California.

Lee was in town Friday to bolster registration for the state-run insurance plan.

"There's about 190,000 San Diegans eligible to get financial support through the Affordable Care Act to make healthcare more affordable. There's an additional 110,000 San Diegans eligible for Medi-Cal," Lee said.

Lee says San Diegans are signing up at a faster rate than the rest of the state, and applications are expected to swell leading up to December 15, the deadline to get coverage starting January 1.
