San Diego Zoo welcomes new African elephant

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An African elephant from a closed facility in New Zealand has a new home at the San Diego Zoo.

Mila, 41, had been living at the Franklin Zoo & Wildlife Sanctuary, which shut down after the death of its founder. The elephant arrived at the San Diego Zoo Thursday and will be in quarantine for several months, park officials said.

Mila will be able to smell and communicate with other elephants but will be physically separated from them. She will be gradually introduced to the zoo's other female pachyderms later.

The San Diego Zoo said the shuttered sanctuary in Tuakau, New Zealand, near Auckland, found new homes for each of its 420 animals. Mila had lived there since 2009.
