GLEN OAKS (CNS) - A motorist was seriously injured Monday when an SUV plowed into the back of a slow-moving tractor-trailer on Interstate 8 near Alpine.

The 40-year-old woman was heading west behind a BMW sedan that changed lanes while approaching the big rig near Tavern Road in the Glen Oaks area shortly after 8:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

For unknown reasons, the trailing driver failed to slow or steer around the commercial vehicle, which was traveling downhill in the right-hand lane at about 25 mph with its warning flashers activated.

"A witness said there was plenty of time for (her) to move over," CHP public-affairs Officer Kevin Pearlstein said.

The woman's 2013 Range Rover smashed into the rear of the truck at about 75 mph, winding up wedged underneath it. Emergency crews freed the unconscious motorist, and medics airlifted her to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego for treatment of severe, potentially life-threatening trauma.

No other injuries were reported.

The accident left one of the two westbound freeway lanes in the area blocked for about 90 minutes while crews used heavy equipment to get the crumpled SUV out from under the cargo vehicle, which was hauling frozen chicken, Pearlstein said.
