OCEANSIDE (CBS 8) – A water main break created a large sinkhole Wednesday, causing hundreds of drivers to be diverted in Oceanside.

The hole was reported at about 7 a.m. by a motorist. Work crews were at the scene attempting to repair the older 16-inch water main.

All of North River Road was closed from Sleeping Indian Road west for about a mile, according to Chopper 8 live reports. The diversion has created a 20-minute detour for motorists.

North River Road was expected to re-open between 9:00 p.m. and midnight on Wednesday.

Ten addresses were without water service for the day due to the break, a city representative reported.

According to the city of Oceanside, the iron water main was installed in 1986.
