SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A vehicle struck and gravely injured a 16-month-old boy in Normal Heights Wednesday.

The accident in the 4400 block of Wilson Avenue was reported shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.

A 22-year-old woman leaving a home where the child was being cared for apparently backed out of the driveway and unknowingly ran over the toddler, who had gotten out of the home somehow. The child was discovered minutes later by the caregiver's 10-year-old daughter.

Officers performed CPR on the victim prior to the arrival of medics, who took the child to Rady Children's Hospital for treatment of severe injuries, SDPD spokesman Jim Johnson said. He was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m.

The child's parents were notified of the accident when they arrived at the caregiver's home.

The driver was pulled over a short distance from the home.
