State DA introduces recidivism reduction initiative

Posted: Updated:

(CBS 8) - State Attorney General Kamala Harris is launching an initiative aimed at curbing the rate of crimes committed by former prison inmates.

Her department's new Division of Recidivism Reduction and Re-entry will target and track potential re-offenders. It will work with district attorneys around the state to create a database to identify trends and risk factors.

San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis says a similar program here in our county has produced results.

"We worked with more than 1,000 participants and resulted in a long term savings of over $10 million, the recidivism rate in San Diego County plunged to 34 percent," Dumanis said.

According to Harris, as many as two-thirds of inmates who are freed from prison or jail in the state commit another crime within three years.
