Illegal trap kills coyote, could have snared a child

Posted: Updated:

VISTA (CBS 8) - They're cruel, they're illegal and they're dangerous. State fish and wildlife authorities are looking for the person who set an illegal snare trap that killed a coyote in Vista.

Early Sunday morning, Vista resident Bill Reilly discovered a dying coyote in his backyard and contacted animal rescue to help. He soon realized it had gotten caught in an illegal snare trap.

The coyote had jumped the fence in the night and did everything it could to escape.

An investigation is underway to find the person responsible for setting the trap.

"It was a crime, a rather horrible one. The coyote died a horrible, slow death," Richard Burg of California Fish and Wildlife said.

Snare traps are illegal in California for obvious reasons.

"The snare just tightened around the midsection and then cut into the midsection. From my understanding the coyote was nearly cut in half.

"What if that was someone's pet, or even worse -- someone's child that became entrapped in it and he's out by himself. It's a serious violation and that's why our law enforcement division is looking into it," Burg said.

Bill Reilly has a question for whoever did this

"What did it do to you? Why did you think you could brutally murder this animal? What did it do to you?" he said.

If you have any information in this case, call the Snare Trap Tip Line at 1-888-334-2258.
