SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - UC San Diego students are spreading holiday cheer to local families in need.

Members of a co-ed community service organization called Alpha Phi Omega performs thousands of hours of community service in San Diego each year.

Operation Santa is an annual relief program initiated by Alpha Phi Omega at UC San Diego to provide a Christmas to local families that cannot afford gifts for their children. The goal is to help out as many kids and families as possible experience a true Christmas by bringing gifts and food.

The Operation Santa committee purchases and wraps gifts and delivers the gifts to selected families at their residence by mid-December.

Operation Santa started in 2007 and since then it has received an overwhelming number of requests from families for help.
