Families in need gobble up free turkeys

Posted: Updated:

NATIONAL CITY (CBS 8) - Officials in National City want to make sure everyone gets a chance to gobble up turkey this year. They're giving away 50 free turkeys to needy families.

The annual event kicked off Wednesday, with the city's mayor scheduled to give away turkeys at all 14 schools in National City through Friday.

Mayor Ron Morrison was expected to give away 350 turkeys this year to struggling families selected by school staff members.

"There's a huge need… this is really a community that gives back, between the business people and the community, and it doesn't just happen at the holidays. This is 12 months a year, and that's what makes this a fantastic community," Morrison said.

The giveaway program began seven years ago.
