2 killed as strong winds hit Northern California

Posted: Updated:

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Two people have been killed in the San Francisco Bay Area as high winds knocked out power to thousands of residents.

The Contra Costa Times reports (http://bit.ly/1bWzT3n) a man was killed late Thursday in Oakland when a power line fell to the ground and electrocuted him. Authorities say another man in Oakland died less than an hour later as he tried to avoid debris in the road.

The National Weather Service says the strongest gusts were reported in Alameda and Sonoma counties and reached up to 55 mph. The strong winds are expected again early Friday.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said nearly 39,000 customers were without power late Thursday. There was no estimate when power would be restored.
