IMPERIAL BEACH (CNS/CBS 8) - A 38-year-old man was shot in the legs in Imperial Beach but was able to walk to a nearby residence in search of help, a San Diego County sheriff's sergeant said Monday.

The victim told police he was shot while walking near the intersection of 11th Street and Cypress Avenue, said San Diego sheriff's Sgt. Joel Stranger.

The victim walked to a nearby residence to contact law enforcement at about 6:22 p.m. Sunday, Stranger said. Arriving officers noted the victim had three gunshot wounds to his legs.

"The victim stated he was shot by an unknown suspect while walking near the intersection,'' he said. The victim told deputies he did not know his assailant.

Witnesses told CBS News 8 they were inside their home watching television when they heard the loud noises outside their doorstep.

"We heard four things and we thought, 'oh that's weird,'" said Stephanie Leslie.

She and her children were safe but her daughter said they heard four distinct gunshots.

"I was really scared, it was just really scary for me," said Emily Leslie.

They saw the flashing lights and heard sirens. The mother called her husband who was at nearby Home Depot.

"She was freaking out when she called me and I was like, 'are you kidding me, really are you sure,'" said Kris Leslie.

Investigators said they had not been called to this area of Imperial Beach for any type of trouble.

"There is nothing specific to this area to my knowledge," said Sgt. Joel Stranger.

Deputies believe the victim will survive and are not releasing information about the suspect or the motive. The victim was taken to UCSD Medical Center in San Diego.
