North County: Guns for Gift Cards

Posted: Updated:

ENCINITAS (CBS 8) - People can get rid of their pistols, rifles and shotguns in exchange for holiday gift cards this Saturday.

The annual event called 'Gun for Gift Cards' is designed to reduce the local inventory of firearms that might wind up in the hands of criminals.

The Encinitas Sheriff's Station is hosting a Guns For Gift Cards event in the North County. It's $100 for handguns, $150 for rifles. There's a limit of three gift cards per vehicle.

Gift cards can be redeemed at Walmart stores. The Sheriff's Department purchased the gift cards using $15,000 in asset forfeiture funds.

All weapons collected will be destroyed in accordance with the law.

For more information, contact the Encinitas Sheriff's Station at 760-966-3526.
