Our daily bread: Dudley's Deli

Posted: Updated:

SANTEE (CBS 8) - The only thing better than making a trip all the way out to the country, is not having to make a trip to all the way out to the country.

"So when we're right here in your own backyard, it's a little easier. So it's always fresh," Evan Brunye said.

Dudley's, everyone's favorite backcountry bakery, has opened a deli in a Santee strip mall.

"After 50 years of practice, we're finally ready to expand," Evan said.

Dudley's Deli in the Santee Plaza Shopping Center has everything that made the original location in Santa Ysabel famous.

"We do some baking here on site," Evan said. "Everything else is shipped from the bakery, with their fresh mountain spring water with all the added minerals of the mountain."

The fresh-baked rolls are paired with premium meats and cheeses that are stacked to the max on wide variety of sandwiches.

"Five years of having a deli up there, we've refined it enough to expand with a deli to Santee. So far, the people have been really welcoming and we really appreciate it," Evan said.

"It works for us. We don't have to drive all the way to Santa Ysabel to have a nice sandwich," a customer said.

Dudley's Deli doesn't even officially open until December 4, but the word is already out that they are already doing business. and although you will find their complete line of breads here, this expansion for city slickers is not meant to dissuade flatlanders from taking a ride out to the bakery.

"We really aren't a substitute for the original Dudley's. The whole experience of the beauty of the drive and the beauty up there, we can't compete with that, but we can bring a little slice of the name and the reputation we've earned for ourselves over 50 years, in Santee," Evan said.

So, if you haven't got the time to roll down the two-lane into that rarefied mountain air, you can cruise into scenic Santee for a taste of country, as they say, right in your own backyard.
