Police called after baby, toddler found alone in van in Scripps Ranch

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A local mother could be in big trouble Tuesday after leaving her two young children -- including her 10-month-old baby -- inside a minivan while she went shopping in Scripps Ranch.

According to police, the unidentified woman parked at the shopping center Tuesday afternoon, got out and went into a Trader Joe's to shop for about a half-hour.

Customers and workers inside a nearby eyebrow salon spotted the 3-year-old and the baby inside the van, with its windows rolled up.

"The other one was sitting in the beating sun, so it was pretty scary," a bystander said.

As the concerned mothers went to stores looking for the mother, they tried opening the van and eventually called 911.

"A couple of minute later the fire department came and the mom came out of Trader Joe's with her shopping cart full of groceries," a witness said.

The kids were checked out and there was no sign of injuries. Police called the children's father to drive the family home.

Police tell CBS News 8 they are taking the case seriously, and will forward it to the district attorney, who has the option to file felony child endangerment charges against the woman.
