Larry's thoughts on Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - With Thanksgiving just two days away, Larry Himmel has some thoughts on what the holiday really means. As usual, when Larry has something on his mind, it usually ends up in a rhyme.

It's easy these days

'Midst all this strife

To curse our fate

To bemoan our life.

And feel as if

We have no voice

With few options

And little choice.

Financially flailing

Our future fixed

A pawn in the game

Of partisan politics.

If life seems filled

With sorrow, not glee

Please take a minute

And just humor me.

If gloom and doom

Seem like our lot.

Just inventory

What you've got.

Be thankful for family

No if ands or buts

Although on Thursday

They will drive us nuts.

Your sister-in-law will start a fight

When she gets in the booze.

While your niece's new fiance

Is covered in tattoos.

Your uncle brings some woman

Who's only half his age.

His ex-wife throws a fit

And she leaves in a rage.

Your brother brings a box of wine

About two bucks it costs.

Meanwhile the Thanksgiving bird

Refuses to defrost.

Last year, your little sister

Claimed she was a Pagan.

This year, wants a special menu

Because now she is a vegan.

Grandma already asleep

And snoring in the chair.

Surrounded by a noxious odor

That's wafting through the air.

Someone let the dog out

And now he is a stray.

Who nipped the neighbor's kid

And they called the SPCA.

Meanwhile, Aunt Mimi's casserole

Smells like it spoiled

And Uncle Al's old pick up truck

Is in your driveway leaking oil.

Still there's a warm glow

Surrounded by those you love

Remembering the ones who came before

And now are up above.

Toasting all the memories

Retelling those old stories.

Lots of laughs and hugs

Recalling former glories.

Because these folks are family

To love them is no disgrace

And we'll do again next year

Just not at your place.

Happy Thanksgiving.
