Father Joe dishing up traditional holiday feast

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Thanksgiving is upon us and cooking a feast for one family is quite a task, but imagine cooking for thousands of people. That was the scene at Saint Vincent de Paul where Thanksgiving meals were served Wednesday.

Father Joe's Villages opened their doors at 11:00 a.m. and then again at 5:00 p.m.

We asked Sister Patricia just how many meals they'd provide Wednesday, and she told us they'd serve the young and the old, until everyone is fed.

Some of the people in attendance were Joan and Richard Christenson are thankful this year to sit down and enjoy their first Thanksgiving meal together, as a married couple. The new title, husband and wife has a ring to it, and makes them feel giddy.

Serving the newlyweds was Kinya Lewis a volunteer who says not too long ago her home burned down, which forced her to live in a motor home for three years.

We found Father Joe in the kitchen, sneaking a taste of some of that savory stuffing. For 32 years, Father Joe's been helping his neighbors in need.

If you follow the long line for food out the door, it becomes clear how many people living on the streets need a meal and a chance to laugh.

Although the white tablecloths and decorations are a Thanksgiving Day splurge, Sister Patricia says there's really nothing special about Wednesday's meal. It's a service they provide more than 3,200 times a day, 365 days a year.

Sister Patricia also says despite the misconception that Father Joe's Villages is well-funded, they struggle every day to put food on the table and would benefit from donations this year.

Along with making cash donations, you help Father Joe's Villages in several different ways, including donating jewelry, furniture or even a car. CLICK HERE for more information.
