CHP begins maximum enforcement period

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Wednesday kicked off the holiday weekend as the busiest travel day of the year for automobiles and that means the California Highway Patrol is on high alert, keeping the roads safe.

A four-day long maximum enforcement period began Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and continues through midnight Sunday.

All available officers will be out on patrol looking for people who are a danger to themselves or others on the road.

"If you're gonna speed, if you're not gonna wear your seatbelt, if you're gonna talk or text and you get stopped by one of us expect a citation. And if you're gonna go out and drink and drive expect to go to jail," explained Kevin Pearlstein with the CHP.

Drivers are encouraged to be patient and give themselves extra time to get where they're going.

Anyone who sees a drunk driver is encouraged to call 911.
