Holiday shopping season officially begins

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Black Friday is more like Gray Friday today, smudged a little bit because many of the major stores around the county opened on Thanksgiving Day for early holiday shoppers and will operate until late tonight.

Several of the local shopping malls opened at midnight and are set to conduct business until 10 p.m. The exceptions include Otay Ranch Town Center, Westfield Horton Plaza and the Viejas Outlets, which were scheduled to open at 6 a.m.; the Grossmont Center, which was set to open at 8 a.m.

Major retailers that began their holiday shopping season Thursday evening included Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart.

Among the deals at electronics retailer Best Buy are an iPad for $299, a 55-inch television for $499 and a Kindle Fire HD with a 7-inch screen for $99.

Target was offering a basketball hoop and backboard for $369 -- more than $200 off the retail price, 30 percent off Disney Junior Toys and 30 percent off Hot Wheels gear.

Wal-Mart's deals included 30 percent off Barbie dolls and accessories, a 12-piece Magic Bullet blender for $29 and 30 percent of Lego toys.
